Climbing big peaks (or even smaller ones!) in Wrangell-St. Elias doesn’t just involve climbing. Since many of our mountains are so seldom climbed, when you decide to tackle one, it’s not uncommon to be the first ones up that route in years, if not decades.
Our three-person team made it to the base of University Peak today – the first ones to access the peak from the area known as “Beaver Basin” in at least 6 years (the last time local pilot legend Paul Claus can remember landing there). Take a look at this gorgeous mountain!
Today was beautiful and the forecast is calling for bluebird skies for the next three days as well. University Peak is not a long climb and they are prepared to go fast and light to accomplish their goal (and because the access was by single-passenger super cub loads!). We hope to hear from them with an update tomorrow or Friday. Please follow us on Facebook and Instagram for more frequent updates on this and our other trips. We will post here as well if they call in with a dispatch and/or reach the summit.
Until then, dream of climbing mountains and wish our team the best of luck!
