Guide Spotlight – Max Pierce

blue sky mountaineerMax came to us in 2014 with lots of experience climbing the impressive ice flows in western Colorado. While having little Alaska experience at first, he’s changed that over the years, proving himself to be an extremely competent and knowledgeable guide in the backcountry. A climber at heart, Max is continuously drawn upwards, whether that brings him to the top of a boulder, a high Alaska peak, or up into the rafters of the Powerhouse. Trained as a gymnast from a young age, Max had the strength and flexibility to easily transition into climbing as he got older – but if you ask, he can still demonstrate his “Iron Cross” from the rings hanging in the Powerhouse! If you’re out in the backcountry, ask him to show off his handstand!

In addition to his impressive climbing resume, Max is extremely personable, and has a fantastic sense of humor! He can always be counted on for a laugh, whether it’s unpacking gear around the Powerhouse, guiding ice climbing out on the glacier, or hiking through the rain on a backpacking trip. His infectious smile shares his true passion for the wilds of Alaska, specifically the Wrangell-St. Elias backcountry. We always enjoy the time we spend with Max, and we know you will too! So next time you’re up in McCarthy, stop by the Powerhouse and give him a shout!
