How to Choose the Perfect Multi-Day Adventure in Alaska

How to Choose the Perfect Multi-Day Adventure in Alaska

So many trips… so little time! When you start browsing multi-day adventures with St. Elias Alpine Guides, it’s easy to get swept up in the photos—towering peaks, glowing glaciers, braided rivers, and wild, open tundra. Everything looks amazing (because it is), but before you click “Book Now,” let’s talk about what’s really behind those big grins: a lot of hard work, some tired legs, and the incredible satisfaction of earning your Alaska adventure.

Multi-day trips in the Wrangells can be physically and mentally challenging—and that’s part of what makes them so rewarding. But there’s a fine line between an epic challenge and a miserable sufferfest, and choosing the right trip for you (and your group) makes all the difference.

Step 1: What’s Your #1 Goal?

Start by asking yourself: What do I really want out of this trip?

  • Relax and recharge? Go for a scenic base camp or rafting trip where the pace is mellow and the packs are light.

  • Push yourself? Try a point-to-point backpacking or mountaineering expedition for a true backcountry test.

  • Make memories with friends or family? Base camp and rafting trips are great for groups that want quality time in a wild, unplugged setting.

  • Learn new skills? Technical courses and mountaineering expeditions are perfect for building confidence with expert guidance.

And remember—this isn’t just your goal. Think about everyone in your group. The best trip is one where all adventurers are equally excited and comfortable with the plan. If someone’s being dragged along into something beyond their comfort zone, the whole group will feel it.

If you’ve got a mix of abilities or interests, let us know! We can design a custom multi-day trip that works for everyone—usually a basecamp-style adventure, since they’re the most versatile and allow for different activity levels each day.

Step 2: What Are Your Interests?

Are you into birding, geology, wildflowers, wildlife photography, or journaling from your tent flap? If so, consider booking a private trip. That way, we can tailor your adventure around your special interests—timing hikes for the best light, lingering at fascinating rock formations, or spending extra time in great bird habitat. Private trips give you the flexibility to focus on what you love most about the wild.

Step 3: How Does It Fit Into Your Alaska Itinerary?

If this adventure is part of a bigger Alaska trip, think about how it complements the rest of your journey. Our region is known for its glaciated terrain, deep wilderness, and incredible history, so even if you’ve already seen Denali or the Kenai, you haven’t seen this. Wrangell-St. Elias is wilder, quieter, and (we’ll argue) more rewarding.

Step 4: Be Realistic About Your Experience Level

Alaska is bigger, rougher, and more remote than anything in the Lower 48. That’s the draw—but it also means you want to choose a trip that matches your experience and endurance. It’s totally fine to challenge yourself, but it’s also okay to start with something approachable. Our guides are experts at helping you push your limits just enough while keeping things safe and fun.

Which Multi-Day Trip Is Right for You?

Let’s break down our adventure styles so you can see which fits best.

🏕️ Base Camp Trips

Fly into a wild corner of Alaska, set up camp near the airstrip, and explore from there on day hikes or paddles. No heavy packs, no daily moves—just pure wilderness and plenty of time to soak it all in.

Perfect for: beginner campers, families, mixed-ability groups, or anyone wanting a balance of adventure and relaxation.

🎒 Mini-Backpacking Trips

We fly out, shoulder our packs, and hike a short distance to establish camp. Over several days, we explore nearby valleys and ridges, moving camp once or twice.

Perfect for: newer backpackers or those who want a less strenuous Alaska adventure. Great for kids 12 and up!

🏔️ Point-to-Point Backpacking Trips

Our classic Alaska expedition! We hike 4–8 days through completely wild terrain, carrying everything we need and camping somewhere new each night.

Perfect for: experienced backpackers and strong hikers who crave challenge, solitude, and vast wilderness. No “easy” options here—the terrain is rugged, the weather can be relentless, and that’s what makes it unforgettable.

🌊 Rafting Trips

Spend 2–6 hours a day on the river, gliding past massive peaks and remote valleys, stopping for short hikes and riverside lunches. Each night, we camp in pristine wilderness with time to relax, stretch, play games, and enjoy fresh-cooked meals.

Perfect for: those who want the adventure of the wild with a little more comfort—no heavy packs, more downtime, and views you just can’t reach on foot. Great for families and groups with mixed abilities (kids 8+ welcome).

🧭 Mountaineering Expeditions

We fly into remote mountain zones to climb and ski some of Alaska’s tallest peaks—far from crowds or busy base camps. These are self-sufficient wilderness expeditions in their purest form: big peaks, big commitment, big reward.

Perfect for: experienced mountaineers ready to test themselves on Alaska’s wild giants. Vetting and prior experience required.

⛏️ Technical Courses

Learn a variety of skills from photography to alpine safety directly from the experts—on real Alaskan glaciers! These courses are hands-on, flexible, and focused on building your mountain confidence.

Perfect for: anyone eager to learn technical skills in an unforgettable classroom. No certification, just pure experience and growth.
