— Skolai Pass Fly-In Hiking —
Surrounded by magnificent hanging glaciers and home to caribou, Dall sheep, and bear, Skolai Pass is an ideal destination for a guided, fly-in day hike. The morning of your hike, you and your professional mountain guide will board a bush plane and fly east from McCarthy, up the Nizina River. You’ll want to keep your camera close by because shortly after takeoff your plane is dwarfed by the sheer faces of the Mile High Cliffs. As you continue up river, iceberg-choked Nizina Lake and the Nizina Glacier come into view and soon enough, your pilot touches down on the soft tundra of Skolai Pass.
With the entire day ahead of you, the hiking options are plentiful. You and your guide may choose to explore the southern side of Skolai Pass and the magnificent hanging glaciers known as the Seven Sisters. If a more strenuous hike is what you are after, you may choose to hike up a series of alpine benches and head for Chitistone Pass, an airy perch surrounded by high peaks, hanging glaciers and sweeping valley views that will take your breath away. Whatever you decide to do, Skolai Pass offers a truly Alaskan wilderness experience that won’t soon be forgotten.
To keep in accordance with recent Alaska State mandates, we are requiring advanced reservations for all of our activities at this time. While in the past we have prided ourselves on always having availability for walk-ins, we are hopeful that this required measure will help continue to curb the spread of the virus as the state begins to open back up. So if you’re planning on heading out to the Wrangells this summer, please make a reservation today! You can easily book online yourself by clicking the orange “Book This Trip” button on the left or give us a call and we’ll be happy to assist you!
