Thank you so much for the Copper River Trip. It was fabulous. The guides were the best I've ever been with. I've done a lot of river trips and this was the best!

N. Magee Rafting Copper River Trip

The quintessential Alaskan river trip!

The Copper River is the only waterway to cut through the mighty Chugach Mountains, from the dry interior of the Wrangell-St. Elias to the lush Copper River Delta, just miles from the salty waters of Prince William Sound. The changing landscape includes everything you think of when you think “Alaska” – white-capped mountains, glaciers calving into the water, wildlife sightings and the world-famous salmon run! The historic waterway allows access to spectacular terrain and unforgettable views, making this the quintessential Alaskan rafting trip!

Trip Highlights:

  • Changing scenery and a variety of vistas
  • Good chances of wildlife sightings and world-class birding
  • Short and rugged hikes break up each day of rafting
  • A great option for larger groups

Logistics

You’ll need to be in Chitina by 1pm on launch day. In Chitina, you’ll meet your guides, repack your gear into dry bags and make sure you are fully prepared to head into the backcountry. If you are driving plan on a 5hr drive from Anchorage and know that there is a place to leave your vehicle near Chitina for the duration of the river trip.

The trip ends in the remote town of Cordova. There is no road access to Cordova, however, you can travel to Anchorage or other Alaskan destinations from Cordova via commercial flights, bush planes or the Alaska Marine Highway (ferry system).

Any luggage you don’t want to bring on the river with you can be stowed in our van and it will meet you in Cordova by the end of the float.

Many adventurers like to start the trip with a few days in McCarthy/Kennecott, accessing the interior or WSENP, enjoying local hikes and activities, and getting more historical context for the trip down the Copper. Check out our Transportation Page to learn how to get to and from McCarthy. Check out our Lodging Page for lodging recommendations in the area.

Trip Package

If you are planning your trip +2 months before your trip start date, upgrade to a Trip Package! A Trip Package will include transportation to/from McCarthy, local lodging, and any other local activities you’re interested in. We charge a non-refundable $50 Trip Package fee per person for this service.
