Growing up in Salmon, Idaho, Jake spent his early days enjoying the outdoors and playing hockey and football (also outdoors.) Sticking to his Idaho roots, Jake went to Boise State University, where he dove deeper into the world of backpacking and mountaineering. He went on many remote trips throughout the Northwest, from bushwacking unnamed traverses to summiting Mt. Rainier after finals week (now that’s the way to celebrate!). After graduating, he packed his bags and moved to The Last Frontier, and he hasn’t looked back since. He has fallen in love with the endless adventure Alaska has to offer and is currently working on obtaining “sourdough” status – a nick-name only given to the heartiest of longtime Alaska residents.
Nowadays when he’s not guiding for us in McCarthy, Jake works as a teacher in Palmer, Alaska – doing his best to educate the youth about all things math and history. At the end of the day or on a weekend, when you think he’d want to kick up his feet and relax, you’ll more likely find him skiing, hiking, backpacking, hunting, ice climbing, and road-tripping all around Alaska.
As your guide, you will find Jake warm, skilled, and knowledgeable. He loves to tell a good story and hear about yours! When planning your next trip, be sure to ask him for all of the best local spots. Join him on a backpacking trip with us, you won’t be disappointed!
