If you’re interested in summer work with St. Elias Alpine Guides, but are unsure of which position to apply for, read the guidelines below!

Internship:

  • You have significant personal experience in the outdoors, including at least 50 days of one or more of the following: hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, ice climbing and rafting.
  • You have experience taking your friends into the outdoors hiking, backpacking, climbing or on the water, and enjoy showing them the ropes.
  • You have experience living in rustic and/or communal environments.
  • You are a people-person, with the ability to get along with and relate to clients and co-workers from all walks of life.
  • You are a hard worker, and don’t mind putting in long hours doing often non-glamorous tasks for little pay.
  • You have an interest in learning more about the guiding industry and may be interested in a career in guiding (not required).
  • You have at least 2 years of college and/or life experience post high-school.

Glacier Hiking/Historical Tour Guide (Day Guide):

In addition to the qualifications of an intern…

  • You have professional leadership experience in the outdoors, including guiding hiking, backpacking, rafting and/or climbing trips OR you have very significant personal experience in these areas and at least 4 years in the work-force post college (if you don’t have outdoor leadership experience).
  • You have had job(s) that demonstrate your ability to relate to people from many different backgrounds.
  • You have at least 4 years of college and/or life experience post high-school.

Rafting Guide:

In addition to the qualifications of a day guide…

  • You have commercial guiding experience on Class III-IV whitewater.
  • You have solid Class III-IV rowing skills (not paddle-captaining) and at least 30 days on the oars, preferably on high-volume and/or glacially-fed rivers.

Ice Climbing Guide:

In addition to the qualifications of a day guide…

  • You have a basic knowledge of a variety of rock climbing knots and hitches.
  • You have significant personal outdoor rock or ice climbing experience (or climbing-specific search and rescue work), with solid ropework skills.
  • You have experience setting rock or ice anchors on single- or multi-pitch climbs.
  • You own a UIAA/CE approved harness and belay device.

Office Staff:

In addition to at least the qualifications of an intern…

  • You have experience working on the front lines of hospitality, ie in a front office, reception, etc
  • You are a great multi-tasker and enjoy balancing many different responsibilities in a busy office
  • You want to focus on office/customer service work, but also get a chance to try your hand at guiding glacier hikes and historical tours.
