If you’re interested in summer work with St. Elias Alpine Guides, but are unsure of which position to apply for, read the guidelines below!
Minimum Qualifications for Any Position:
- You have at least 2 years of college and/or life experience post-high-school.
- You are a people person, with the ability to get along with and relate to clients and co-workers from all walks of life.
- You have some public speaking or group management skills.
- You are a hard worker and don’t mind putting in long hours doing often non-glamorous tasks.
- You have experience living in rustic and/or communal environments.
- Have a legal right to work in the United States – citizenship, residency or work visa. (Sorry, we cannot sponsor your visa application.)
Additional Qualifications for the Internship Position:
- You are enrolled in a degree program at the time of the internship.
- You have significant personal experience in the outdoors, including at least 50 days of one or more of the following: hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, ice climbing and rafting.
- You have experience taking your friends into the outdoors hiking, backpacking, climbing or on the water, and enjoy showing them the ropes.
- You have an interest in learning more about the guiding industry and may be interested in a career in guiding (not required).
Additional Qualifications for Glacier Hiking Guide:
- You have at least 4 years of college and/or life experience post high-school.
- You have professional leadership experience in the outdoors, including guiding hiking, backpacking, rafting and/or climbing trips
OR - You have very significant personal experience in these areas and at least 2 years in the work-force post-college.
AND - You have had jobs that demonstrate your ability to relate to people from many different backgrounds.
- You must hold a minimum of CPR/First Aid certifications. Wilderness Advanced First Aid or First Responder is preferred.
Additional Qualifications for Ice Climbing Guide:
- You have at least 4 years of college and/or life experience post-high-school.
- You have professional leadership experience in the outdoors, including guiding hiking, backpacking, rafting and/or climbing trips
OR - You have very significant personal experience in these areas and at least 2 years in the work-force post-college.
AND - You have significant personal outdoor rock or ice climbing experience (multi-pitch preferred), or climbing-specific search and rescue work, and can demonstrate solid ropework skills.
- You have a familiarity with a variety of climbing knots and hitches. You have experience setting rock or ice anchors on single- or multi-pitch climbs.
- You own a UIAA/CE approved harness and belay device.
- You must hold active CPR and Wilderness First Responder Certifications.
Additional Qualifications for Rafting Guide:
- You have at least 4 years of college and/or life experience post-high-school.
- You have professional leadership experience in the outdoors, including guiding hiking, backpacking, rafting and/or climbing trips
OR - You have very significant personal experience in these areas and at least 2 years in the work-force post-college.
AND - You have had jobs that demonstrate your ability to relate to people from many different backgrounds.
- You have commercial guiding experience on Class III-IV whitewater.
- You have solid Class III-IV rowing skills (not paddle-captaining) and at least 30 days on the oars, preferably on high-volume and/or glacially-fed rivers.
- You must hold an active Swiftwater Rescue Certification.
- You must hold active CPR and Wilderness First Responder Certifications.
Additional Qualifications for Office Team Members:
- You have experience working in customer service and/or hospitality
- You have experience with administrative work and are comfortable with basic office tasks like sending emails, answering phone calls, using an online calendar, etc.
- You enjoy working in a fast-paced environment
- You are organized and responsible and process complicated tasks
- Part-Time Office Team – You want to focus on office work but also get a chance to try your hand at guiding glacier hikes and historical tours. See above qualifications.
