An introduction to Alaska big-mountain climbing....without the crowds
The Sheep Glacier winds its way almost to the summit of this northernmost member of the Wrangell Mountains. The route is moderately crevassed, and offers "big mountain" characteristics such as altitude, weather, white-out navigation and a large dose of remoteness. With 13,000 feet (3,962 m) of vertical gain along the way, there is plenty of climbing and scenic views of Mt. Blackburn, the shield volcano Mt. Wrangell and the Fuji-like pyramid of Mt. Drum.
Participants should be strong backpackers or beginning climbers with strong legs. For the intermediate backcountry skier, Sanford offers stellar big mountain lines.
