Soaring Heights and Golden History
The Wrangell Mountain Majesty backpacking trip from Canyon Creek to May Creek covers some of the most beautiful and historic terrain in Wrangell St. Elias National Park. It’s just a few miles southeast of McCarthy, but you’ll be entering an entirely different world! Enjoy hiking past soaring peaks and breathtaking valleys as you travel back through time on this exhilarating point-to-point backpacking trip.
Your adventure will begin as the pilots of Wrangell Mountain Air take your group to an airstrip so short, you can only go one by one in the smallest plane they have. Once the group is fully assembled, we’ll begin hiking up the canyon to get our first look at Pyramid Peak towering to the west, and the behemoths of the St. Elias range to the east. The canyon will give us our first opportunity to practice creek crossing, a skill that will come in handy later in the trip.
As we edge around Pyramid Peak, over rock glaciers and through fields of wildflowers, the rest of the journey will come into view, surrounded by hanging glaciers and snowfields, rushing waters and tundra. One last push up and over the narrow shoulder of Andrus Peak and we’ll head down to the valley where miners dreamed of gold a hundred years ago. The remains of gold mining camps and abandoned mine shafts will follow us the rest of the way to May Creek.
