Located within a short bush plane flight of McCarthy, Alaska, the Nizina Glacier offers a spectacular setting for a remote, wilderness base-camping adventure. Surrounded by grand peaks, the massive ice flow of the Nizina Glacier will take your breath away, as it descends from the high snow fields surrounding 13,845 ft (4,219m) Regal Mountain. At the toe of the glacier, an iceberg-filled lake forms the headwaters of the mighty Nizina River. Day hiking opportunities abound and wildlife sightings are not unusual.

When we picture the perfect setting for a base camp, the alpine tundra of Skolai Pass is right at the top. To the south, this remote valley is flanked by the exotic Hole-in-the-Wall Glacier with its seven icy tongues. To the north, the mighty Frederika Glacier lumbers down towards Skolai Valley. To the east, lofty Chitistone Pass is cloaked in wildflowers, dotted with pristine alpine lakes. All of our favorite elements of Alaska rolled into one great location.

True to its name, Iceberg Lake is filled with icebergs; however, they aren’t the floating kind. In fact, most of the lake has no water in it at all and the icebergs are sitting on the ground! Located 45 minutes south of McCarthy by air and nestled in the Chugach Mountains, Iceberg Lake is formed because an enormous glacier dams up the river - which occasionally releases in a spectacular display of natural power.
