Seeking Experienced Alaska Backpacking Guides

St. Elias Alpine Guides has a few coveted positions open for experienced backpacking guides. Applicants must have previous experince leading backpacking trips for small groups. Alaska experience is a big plus, as is experience working for a commercial outfitter.

We guide both basecamp and point-to-point hiking trips in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. All of our trips are off trail and many involve significant glacier and river crossings. Many trips start and/or end with a bush plane flight deep into the backcountry of the park, so comfort with being far from any kind assistance is mandatory. Most of our groups are 2-4 clients with one guide, so backpacking guides must be comfortable leading groups and making important decisions in the wilderness without a co-leader.

Backpacking guides also work as day hiking and/or ice climbing guides between multi-day trips.

Applicants who do not make the cut for backpacking guide can be considered for a day hiking and/or ice climbing position with the possibility to move into multi-day guiding in the future as they gain experience in the park.
