Alaska Backcountry Skills Seminar
![]() |
Even for experienced backpackers, travel in Alaska requires
unique skills. Glacier travel knowledge is required for many popular
destinations. Black bears and grizzlies abound. River crossings, with
their swift currents and cold water, present one of the most underrated
and dangerous aspects of Alaskan backcountry travel.
Our one day seminar gives you a chance to learn from the pros. Starting at our headquarters in McCarthy (located in The Powerhouse), we’ll hit the classroom and discuss river crossings techniques. After we discuss the many aspects involved in reading and crossing a glacially fed stream or river in Alaska, we’ll change into our river clothes and cross McCarthy Creek a number of times, going over all the techniques we discussed. After
we dry off and warm up, we’ll travel to Kennecott and start our
hike out to the Root Glacier. Once there, your guide will teach you
about glaciers, glacier travel, crampon and ice axe usage, and various
improvisational techniques. |
After the glacier, we’ll go back to the classroom to discuss bears, bear behavior, camp setup, food safety, and emergency techniques. We’ll test fire your bear spray and discuss the function of bear canisters and electric fences. As you can see, there is a lot of ground to cover, so know that the Backcountry Skills Seminar is a long, fun day. Feel free to call beforehand to discuss what bear and glacier equipment to bring to McCarthy for your trip and for this seminar, as there is no place to rent or buy gear in McCarthy. 1 client
