If you want to get deep into the wilderness and travel many miles through the mountains but have only a week or two to do it, our river rafting adventures are made for you. The glacially fed rivers of Wrangell St. Elias National Park carry us to many places inaccessible by foot or any other means of transport. Many of our trips start near our base in McCarthy, less than a mile below the terminus of the Kennicott Glacier. On all our trips we splash through rapids and may eat salmon fresh out of the river we travel on, but our river adventures are not based on whitewater or on fishing. Instead, they are based on exploration - exploration of glaciers, of tundra, of wooded stream courses, of routes through mountain ranges draped with ocean mist, of deep, rock walled canyons, and wide open braided glacial valleys. We enjoy fresh food, comfortable camps, and evening campfires next to crystal clear streams. Our rafting adventures include all river gear needed and professional guides with local knowledge and experience. Guests on our river trips need to be in good physical health, but do not to need to be athletes. Rafting opens the way for participants of all ages from all walks of life. You are welcome to participate to whatever extent you prefer – from learning to row the boats and taking daily hikes to just sitting back and enjoying the scenery and good food. | Chitina
River Journey – 3 - 4 days
Highlights: Nizina Canyon, expansive views, eagles, salmon and possible bear sightings. Open riverside camps, view of the Wrangell Mountains This is the shortest and most affordable of our multi-day rafting trips, but still features spectacular scenery and remote wilderness. The journey begins near the headwaters of the Kennicott River, only half a mile below the terminus of the Kennicott Glacier. We float the splashy rapids of the Kennicott and merge into the Nizina, which narrows to a steep-walled canyon, a highlight of the trip. On the second day, the Nizina joins the Chitina and the valley spreads wide as we turn west, skirting the Chugach Mountains. We will stop at clear streams and sloughs to search for spawning salmon and keep our eyes peeled for the grizzlies and eagles that feed on them. The last day we will end our river journey at the confluence of the Copper River, near the tiny town of Chitina. This trip can be done in three or four days, depending on client preference. Four days allows more time for hiking and lounging about camp, while travelers trying to conserve time may prefer the three day option. Chitina River Journey 3-day - $990 (group price) |

Highlights: towering Chugach Mountains, waterfalls, wildlife, Abercrombie Rapids, calving glaciers The Copper River is the only waterway to cut through the mighty Chugach Mountains, from the dry interior of the Wrangell-St. Elias to the lush Copper River Delta. Our journey is one of the most awe-inspiring in the world, as glaciers and waterfalls spill out of the mountains all around us. We are likely to spot a wide variety of wildlife, possibly including eagles, bears, salmon, seals, otters, beavers, arctic terns and many others birds and mammals. We will travel through a wide variety of landscapes, from narrow canyons to wide open sand dunes to lush channels lined by dense underbrush. As we move downstream, the scenery gets more and more spectacular, until we careen through Abercrombie Rapids and into Miles Lake, where two magnificent glaciers calve into the water. After floating in front of the towering ice-face of the Childs Glacier and into the Copper River Delta, our journey ends less than ten miles from the salty waters of Prince William Sound. Highlights: bush plane flights into the park, glacial lake exploration, mile-high cliffs, waterfalls, hiking in the vast Chitistone Valley, Nizina Canyon rapids Less than a dozen people float this stretch of river each season. This is a unique and remote wilderness adventure, as we will be dropped off and picked up by a bush plane that lands on the river bar. Our flight in takes us to the lake at the toe of the Nizina Glacier, surrounded by ice-capped peaks and rocky crags. The lake itself is full of icebergs, some as large as a house. We will spend the first day hiking and rowing around the lake and exploring the wonders of ice and rock. On the second day we run the splashy rapids of the Nizina River. That night we camp beneath the towering Mile-High Cliffs and the following day we will hike up the broad Chitistone Valley. |

Our expedition starts with a bush plane flight to a small airstrip, carved from the terminal moraines of the Chitina Glacier. The scenery is rich. The river provides an undisturbed float down a huge, braided, glacial river. The upper Chitina is an ageless path between the two large mountain ranges - the Wrangell and St. Elias Mountains. Our tour follows this mighty river from its birthplace to it's confluence with the Copper River in six adventurous days. We end at the small village of Chitina. Headwaters
